Noah NJ Bowman
painter
Noah NJ's paintings are inspired from gestural movements of the body and are studies of the transitional state of consciousness between the body and mind. Figuratively based, the painterly gestures and raw color of paint strokes emphasize subtle and drastic movements of body parts that are blended and layered over one another.
Torsos and limbs are painted as symbols of balance and power struggles, as there is a sense of losing or finding one's self emotionally and physically conscious in a moment, as one does in a dream-scape or in their most vulnerable state. Each figurative moment is rendered in contrast to other overlapping forms to create an optical illusions and sensations of constant visual translation. |

"I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Emily Carr University, Vancouver, British Columbia in 2010. It wasn't until after fine art school when I started to develop conceptual dialects and a definitive style of abstract painting. The "all-over" brushstroke you see in my paintings is expressive and gestural, allowing for a sense of raw emotion and spontaneity to occur."
"My paintings are reflected and studied through metaphysical instances of existence and absence, and question the sensations we feel as humans through color and forms in imagery. I intend on critiquing both body and mind in my work, and raises awareness to cultural discourses such as consciousness, sensations, stereotypes, cliches, rhetorical statements, ideals and beauty in most of my paintings." |
