At what point do the day-to-day, lived experiences of the modern feminist intersect with the realms of the philosophical, the spiritual, or even the transcendent? Vancouver-based artist Miki Aurora, whose collection features an array of various mediums, poses this question on a regular basis, throughout the course of her multi-faceted production.
Born on the tiny island nation of Singapore and growing up on the west coast of Canada, Aurora's pieces each posses a multi-dimensional component, both aesthetically and conceptually, a quality of the work which clearly lends itself to a compelling, perhaps even transformative, viewer experience. A confessional artist, Aurora's haunting history of ascetic vagrancy enables her to imbue her work with a sharp degree of sociological insight and institutional critique. Whether these socially motivated means take the form of a more abstracted narrative, or are featured through explicit visual gestures, it is clear that Aurora is a strong artist working on the belief that art is a valid means for spreading a social and philosophical message. |
